Ethiopia is ranked 127th out of the 131 countries featured on the Global Innovation Index (GII) of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). The index ranks world economies on their innovation capabilities based on approximately 80 parameters. Ethiopia was ranked 111th on the index in 2019, slipping to 127th in 2020. Among the 26 sub-Saharan countries, the country ranks 24th.
A key marker of Ethiopia’s ranking is the better performance of innovation output (the result of innovation) as compared to innovation input (policies, financial efforts and the like related to innovation). The country ranked 130th in innovation input while ranking 110th in innovation output, illustrating a disparity between policy and financing efforts as compared to the efforts of innovators. However, both innovation input and output performed lower in 2020 than in 2019.
