Ethiopia’s Ethio-Engineering Group (EEG) and China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) recently held a discussion regarding the potential for producing electric buses in Ethiopia. The two sides have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish an electric bus factory in the country.
During the signing of the MoU, Ambassador Suleiman Dedefo , The CEO of Ethio-Engineering Group, stated that EEG is committed to ensure that electric buses are produced in Ethiopia. According to the CEO, the objective is to provide the electric buses to both the domestic market and African markets.
It is to be recalled that in March of this year, EEG and Yotong, a Chinese business that specializes in producing conventional and new energy buses, signed a contract to produce city buses under the Bishoftu Automotive Manufacturing Industry brand. The deal called for the production of 40-seater buses with a carrying capacity of 40 to 120 people.
Ethio-Engineering Group, Ethiopia’s Governmental business enterprise has been at the center of the development of heavy industries in Ethiopia. Re-established in September 2020 under the FDRE Council of Ministers’ Regulation No. 475/2020, it is engaged in manufacturing and trading automotive products, agricultural machineries, construction machineries, power and electronic equipment, metal and metal products, and plastic and polymer products.
This move is part of Ethiopia’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainable transportation. The country has been investing heavily in renewable energy and electric transportation in recent years and China has been a major partner in Ethiopia’s infrastructure development.
