Ethiopian Airlines and UNICEF have finalized a COVID-19 agreement for the transport and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other essentials needed to combat the pandemic.

The agreement is part of UNICEF’s Humanitarian Airfreight Initiative which is an accord with several global airlines including Ethiopian Airlines to support the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Initiative (COVAX). COVAX is a global initiative to ensure that countries with limited resources have fair access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to a press release by Ethiopian Airlines, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for companies, both big and small, to contribute as much as they can in whatever they can to ensure the safety of the societies that they are part of.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam also affirmed that the airline is ready to fulfill this global mission and has made the necessary cold chain preparations with Cainiao, the logistics branch of the Alibaba group. Indeed, last week the airline made its first delivery of COVID-19 vaccines from China to Chad.
