While Kenya's maximum consumption stands at 1,900 MW the grid is expected to generate 2,000 MW in both directions.
Seven companies, including KenGen were listed as finalists for the bid for the drilling license.
The agreement, which was finalized in April 2020, was investigated and reported on by Quartz Africa's Zecharias Zelalem in December.
The project is expected to begin operations in early 2023 and to accelerate Ethiopia's renewable energy goals.
THe Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPC) plans on buying power from the project for the next 25 years.
