Ethio Telecom has inaugurated its very own Tier III modular data centre. The centre was constructed with the support of Chinese telecom giant Huawei and took under three months to complete. It is located in Gola, in Addis Ababa.

Tier III data centres are data centres that host redundant and dual-powered servers, storage, network links, and other components like cooling systems. Typically, Tier III data centres have a 99.982 percent uptime, with only 1.6 hours of down time per year for maintenance and emergency issues.

Ethio Telecom’s new data centre is replacing an old one and can host up to 800 servers via five points of deployment, each hosting 16 cabinets that host 10 servers with a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.4 (1.2 is the most efficient on the PUE scale with 3.0 as the most inefficient).

Routine monitoring and patrolling of the facility is going to be conducted by robotic technology.

The data centre is expected to facilitate all of Ethio Telecom’s ongoing services, with special significance to the recently launched Tele Birr service.

Ethio Telecom’s centre is not the only Tier III data centre being implemented in the country with Raxio Group set to inaugurate its centre within the coming days and wingu.africa, Red Fox, and ScutiX set to do the same within the coming months.
